Crunch Joel Piroe talks with Swansea City to take place in next 24 hours as Leeds United contact confirmed

The Dutch striker is attracting plenty of interest this summer

Swansea City are set to hold crunch talks with Joel Piroe’s representatives to discuss his future.

Piroe currently has one year left on his current deal at the Swansea.com Stadium, and has already indicated he has no intention of signing an extension this summer.

It’s not clear whether Swansea will attempt to change his mind, but WalesOnline has learned that talks between the two camps are set to take place over the next 24 hours, with the striker’s valuation likely to be a key part of conversations.

Swansea slapped a £20million price tag on the striker last summer, but there hasn’t yet been a concrete indication on what sort of valuation they would be looking for this time around.

After seeing Viktor Gyokeres leave Coventry City for a large fee earlier in the window, there’s a feeling that the Swans could perhaps be tempted to revisit their previous valuation, in a move that would subsequently bankroll Michael Duff’s rebuild.

Whatever the price tag, there’s no shortage of interest in the 23-year-old.

Leicester City and Atalanta have both held initial discussions over a move, while Russell Martin’s Southampton have also made enquiries, but the prospect of a move to St Mary’s will depend on whether they can sell a couple of their own stars following relegation.

Leeds United have also now registered an interest, although it’s understood the striker isn’t currently their primary focus in this window, with Elland Road chiefs believed to be prioritising the capture of a wing-back.

At the time of writing, there hasn’t been a concrete on the table from anyone at this stage.

It’s not clear if Piroe has a personal preference on his next move, but it’s our understanding any potential move would be based on the attraction of the project rather than finances.

As a result, there is still a possibility he may stay until January, or even until next summer, if he doesn’t receive interest from a club he feels will take his development to the next step.

Losing one of the best strikers in the Championship for absolutely nothing is surely an unthinkable scenario for the Swans from a financial point of view, although clearly there’s a very good footballing argument for keeping him.

After all, a striker with more than 40 goals to his name at this level doesn’t always come round too often.

Piroe himself is prepared to stay for one last season. Certainly there’s not indication of any effort to force a move this summer. In fact, his form in pre-season suggests he is, for the time being, focused on preparing for the new campaign.

Indeed, he’s netted three goals for the Swans in the last four pre-season outings, and is expected to play against Oxford United on Friday night.
