26-year-old Wolves target wants out after barely being played in pre-season

Wolves are struggling to sign Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach, but the German club are seemingly trying to protect the defender at the moment in the hope he does not get injured.

As the new season creeps closer, many Wolves fans are now starting to worry.

While Wolves have a decent starting XI, the depth of the squad at the moment is questionable.

Especially at centre-half, where Julen Lopetegui has just three options.

Lopetegui wants new faces, and he especially wants a new central defender.

Elvedi has been mentioned in the last couple of weeks, and now there has been an update on where Wolves are at with their pursuit of the 26-year-old.

Gladbach standing firm over Nico Elvedi despite needing to sell

According to the Rheinische Post, Wolves and Gladbach are still not close to reaching an agreement.

The Bundesliga club are determined to hold out for a double-digit millions offer.

Currently, Wolves are said to be unwilling to meet those demands.

It is not clear right now how much Wolves are willing to offer.

Elvedi is expected to leave this summer because he has turned down a new contract from Gladbach and he only has one year left on his deal.

To prepare for his exit, the club have brought in Max Wober on loan from Leeds United.

Reinische Post say that Elvedi does want to leave the club this summer.

And actually, Gladbach have been trying to protect the player in pre-season.

They know they need to sell in this window, and they don’t want him to get injured which would put suitors off.

Frustration for Wolves fans

It is hugely frustrating that Wolves are currently unable to just pay what Gladbach are asking.

Elvedi is a quality defender and could really add to Wolves’ squad.

Seemingly, Gladbach know that other clubs will likely come in for him before the transfer window closes, and therefore do not want to sell on the super cheap.

It remains to be seen if Wanderers will make a breakthrough.

It has been suggested that the club are still needing to make player sales to be in a position to make signings.

Who knows if Elvedi will still be available by the time Wolves have done that.

The frustrating part of this particular transfer story is that Gladbach are waiting to sell and are even being cautious over the player’s involvement in pre-season.
