JUST IN : See Why Leeds sacked Bielsa just to get Marsch

Angus Kinnear discusses the divisive Marcelo Bielsa decision at Leeds United, saying simply, “We thought.”

The club’s justification for replacing Marcelo Bielsa with Jesse Marsch in 2022 was explained by Leeds United CEO Angus Kinnear.

The Whites’ return to the Championship this year is the result of a multitude of missteps, from the board level to the players’ inadequacies.

In the midst of that, the manager(s) who succeeded Marcelo Bielsa enter the picture, and they were clearly not up to the task either, raising doubts about the wisdom of the decision.

Why did Leeds fire Bielsa in order to hire Marsch?
After a succession of embarrassing Premier League losses in February 2022, Bielsa’s famous career at Elland Road came to an end. Jesse Marsch, the former Red Bull coach, took over in Bielsa’s place.

On the final day of the season, the American led Leeds to safety in 21/22, only to watch as significant investments made the summer after that failed to result in a better league place.

His failure to get a counter-pressing style to work with players incapable of outplaying their opponents in the Premier League is largely down to serious problems in the setup that Marsch adopted.

Angus Kinnear has said what?
Following a difficult couple of years, CEO Angus Kinnear has recently addressed the fanbase on the podcast The Square Ball.

Marsch’s lengthy tenure at the club was discussed, but first, how Victor Orta and company perceived him as the potential successor to Bielsa:

When Victor was evaluating coaches, he noticed a few technical aspects that indicated there were synergies (between Marsch and Bielsa). The very definition of special is Marcelo. It would be challenging to find someone who could deliver in the same manner as he did.

However, based on Jesse’s team’s sprinting and pressing statistics, we

Although pressing high wasn’t the main focus of Marcelo Bielsa’s tactics at Leeds, it was an essential must master in order for his system to function.

There is much more to his style of play than that, and it is so unfortunate that Orta has reduced the necessity for a high-pressing replacement for Bielsa to that.

With a manager who was equally obstinate and unpractical, we slid so severely into a style of play that was abhorrent to see and not even effective.
