Investigation into a critical incident involving a woman’s death is ongoing in Stockton.

A woman passed away overnight close to Newcastle, prompting a critical incident inquiry.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District were called to a unit complex in Mitchell Street, Stockton, just after 12.30pm yesterday (Thursday, September 14, 2023), in response to complaints that a lady was allegedly threatening people with an axe.

After allegedly threatening responding officers with an axe upon arrival, the 47-year-old lady barricaded herself inside a unit.

Police were able to enter the property around 9.45 p.m. after beginning an operation with the aid of tactical specialists, including police negotiators.

In addition to other tactical techniques, police used a Taser to subdue the lady and take her into custody.

She was subsequently led away from the scene and into an ambulance, but shortly afterward, her condition worsened, and she was brought to John Hunter Hospital, where she passed away.

A crime scene was established, and the Homicide Squad’s critical event squad is currently looking into all the incident’s circumstances.

An impartial evaluation will be conducted of that probe.
