After a seven-game losing streak, the ex-Everton, West Ham, and Aston Villa great was fired from his managing position.
Nine games into the new season, a former Everton manager has been fired.

In his first permanent position in management, a former Everton player and manager who had been connected to the team for more than 20 years has been fired.

David Unsworth was a beloved player among Everton supporters who went by the nickname “the Rhino.”

He graduated from the club’s youth academy and made his first team debut in 1992, just before the Premier League was established.

When he started in the 1995 FA Cup final victory against Manchester United, Unsworth cemented his place as a significant member of the Everton squad and helped the team win their last major prize. The versatile defender was recognised for his ability to score important goals and was frequently praised for his set pieces and penalties. He could play both left back and centre back.

In 1997, Unsworth briefly left Everton for brief stints at West Ham and Aston Villa before returning to Merseyside, where he once more played a key role in the team’s ability to avoid relegation.

In order to end his career, he left Everton and played for teams like Portsmouth, Ipswich Town, Wigan, Burnley, and Huddersfield. However, he later came back as

Unsworth spent eight years working as the U23 team’s head coach for Everton. He also had two brief periods as the first team’s interim manager following the dismissals of Ronald Koeman and Roberto Martinez.

He began his first permanent position in football management on September 20, 2022, at National League team Oldham Athletic, but it ended on September 17, 2023, after a seven-game losing streak.

Unsworth is credited with helping the Latics finish in 12th place last season while he was still at Oldham, but the club claims that despite a large increase in the playing budget, he has fallen short of expectations this time around.

According to a statement from Oldham, “the start of the current campaign has sadly not reached the expectations of the club. This is despite a great conclusion to the 2022–23 season, a sizeable investment in the playing budget, and several extremely promising acquisitions during the summer.

“Since the Rothwell family acquired ownership of Oldham Athletic in July 2022, one of their guiding philosophies has been to refrain from managing the club’s day-to-day football operations while ensuring stability for the club’s long-term existence.

“David signed for three seasons to bring stability to the playing front, but despite David and his coaching staff’s diligence and hard work, results have not been successful on the pitch.”

With only seven points from nine games, Unsworth departs Oldham in 22nd place in the National League standings. The Latics’ following game is against York City on Tuesday, September 19.
