spurs key player is seriously injured and will be going for surgery and may not return

After James Maddison’s knee underwent a scan after the midfielder felt an unsettling ‘jolt’ during Sunday’s North London Derby, Tottenham are awaiting the results.

In the 2-2 tie at the Emirates Stadium over the weekend, Maddison, one of Spurs’ star performers thus far in 2023–24, was once again in top form. He provided Son Heung-Min with two assists.

If he is able to play, 26-year-old Maddison, who has been involved in six goals this season, will be one of the danger men when Liverpool visits the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

The former Leicester player, who left the game against Arsenal on 78 minutes after seeming to have his knee forced backwards during a fight with Jorginho, is only somewhat doubtful.

The midfielder underwent a scan on his knee on Monday to evaluate the damage after recently playing through other injuries. Football.london reports that the initial impression is “positive.”

Maddison appeared to downplay the incident when she spoke after the game: “Yeah, I jolted my knee, Jorginho kicked my knee, and my leg just jolted a little bit. Since I’ve just had a few interviews and haven’t visited the physios yet, I’m about to get it checked out.

Ange Postecoglou, the manager, also attempted to allay concerns that his number 10 might be forced to miss upcoming games, saying on football.london: “Madders and Sonny weren’t 100% going into the game but they got through it which suggests that it’s nothing serious.” On Saturday, Liverpool travel to Tottenham for what is expected to be the Reds’ toughest test of the Premier League season thus far.

Spurs are still winless in 2023–24 after their stalemate with Arsenal, and they are currently ranked fourth, two points behind Liverpool.

Another injury concern for Tottenham this weekend is Brennan Johnson. In the draw at Arsenal, the former Nottingham Forest forward was taken off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, the vice captain who has been sidelined since before the international break with a hamstring injury, should return soon, according to Jurgen Klopp. The only other significant first-team absence for the Reds is Thiago Alcantara.
