‘It pains me to say this’

Paige Williams, a winger for Leeds United Women, could be sidelined for a while.
Paige Williams, a winger for Leeds United Women, will likely be out for a while.

On Saturday, September 16, Williams announced via her personal Twitter account that she had damaged her medial collateral ligament (MCL) and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

Williams’ season, which just started going last month, is almost probably over.

The 22-year-old wrote on Facebook: “It hurts to say this, but I recently learned that I have ruptured my ACL and have a grade 2 tear in my MCL.

“The long road to rehabilitation begins today, but I’m determined to don a Leeds jersey once more! Already looking forward to seeing my teammates again.

Take a break.

It will be a long road back, as Williams acknowledged.

Even more detrimental than a broken leg itself, the wounds she received are among the worst a football player may experience.

Not that there is ever a good time to rule something out, but it is particularly painful that her setback occurred so early in the campaign.

Williams, who is renowned for her dexterity and speed, will now need some time to recover before working out in the gym and then on the practise pitch, with the goal of being prepared to participate at the start of the upcoming season.

It’s a setback for Leeds, who had a strong start to the season with four straight wins across all competitions until losing to Middlesbrough last weekend.

On Sunday, September 17, the Whites will play a league match against Durham Cestria at home.

In other Leeds United news, Gordon Strachan’s “embarrassment” words have given the men’s team a chance to show him wrong.
