Time to move on

Every player’s Celtic contract is in progress, with Reo Hatate’s signature still pending and others waiting in queue for new contracts.
The 25-year-old’s contract with the Treble champions may be extended, and the rest of the team’s circumstances are examined.

Reo Hatate is on the verge of signing a contract extension with Celtic, which would make him the eighth Parkhead player to sign an agreement since Brendan Rodgers returned to the team. Anthony Ralston just signed a new deal with the Treble winners.

While players like Jota, Carl Starfelt, and former manager Ange Postecoglou left, the Irishman wasted no time in appraising his team and making sure he secured the most valuable players. Hatate’s fellow midfielder Matt O’Riley has been a standout thus far this season and is reportedly in negotiations for a new deal, which would excite the Celtic supporters.

But who else could be eligible for a delay and who would be cut off? Record Sport examines the Celtic team’s roster and each player’s contract position to determine what the future may hold for them and what Rodgers may be considering in terms of their potential to contribute on the pitch, beginning with those who have already signed contracts.

fresh bargains
Anthony Ralston is the most recent player to sign a new deal, keeping him at the team he adores through at least 2027. The full-back is living the dream alongside his childhood idols.

Callum McGregor, the captain of the Hoops, signed a five-year contract extension in the summer to guide the Treble winners through 2028.

Kyogo Furuhashi: A player that many feared may depart with Ange Postecoglou, possibly going to Spurs alongside the Australian, but who instead chose to sign a new contract with Celtic through 2027.

Stephen Welsh, a stopper who is now out of work, was given a new contract last month that lasts until 2027.

Liel Abada, an Israeli who was the subject of much conjecture last season due to his apparent annoyance at not getting more playing time, put all of that to rest by agreeing to a new contract that runs through 2026. Once he recovers from his injury, he is anticipated to return as a key player.

Daizen Maeda: Another Ange character

The Brendan Rodgers era commitments made by Postecoglou’s recruits run through 2027.

One of Ange Postecoglou’s final acts reportedly involved Scott Bain signing a three-year deal at the end of the previous campaign.

Former MK Dons player Matt O’Riley has been a revelation since transferring to Parkhead for what has turned out to be a steal of a £1.5 million deal. Under Brendan Rodgers, midfielders have prospered, and the Hoops are said to have rejected high-value offers from Leeds United and Italy. Still bound to Parkhead until 2026, but the club wants to lock him into new terms.

Reo Hatate is another player with three years remaining on his contract, although the club is interested in signing him to a longer-term agreement.

According to sources, a breakthrough is “close.” Many believed he was another who might have left the building after Postecoglou, but he might play a significant role under Rodgers in the future.

What comes next?
Carter-Vickers, Cameron Sometimes it takes a player’s absence to recognise how vital they are, and the USA international has most definitely experienced this. He is a major presence in the Hoops back line and, although he is under contract until 2026, it’s probable that, like Hatate and O’Riley, the Hoops will want to lock him down once he regains his fitness for a longer period of time or on better terms.

Liam Scales, an Irish defender who appeared to be headed to Aberdeen, has instead become one of the season’s biggest success stories after stepping up during an injury emergency. His contract is valid until 2025, therefore he could be rewarded for his performance.

Greg Taylor is an underrated left back who will be entering his final year of eligibility next season, thus his future could be decided shortly.

Alistair Johnston, a Canadian full defender, was a wise acquisition that prevented Celtic from suffering as a result of Josip Juranovic’s departure. Deal expires in 2027 but may shortly be extended.

Loanees

Paulo Bernardo is a Portuguese teenager who joined Benfica on a temporary loan, but Celtic, as they did with Jota, have the option to purchase the midfielder. However, this season, the 21-year-old has only made a few appearances off the bench.

As things stand, Nat Phillips, a defender for Liverpool, will return to Anfield in January after being hired as an emergency replacement.

a ticking timer
– Joe Hart The seasoned former England No. 1 has received calls from some quarters for his replacement, and since his contract expires at the conclusion of this season, a decision must be made quickly.

David Turnbull, a former player for Motherwell, may be facing some decisions in the last year of his contract.

It’s time to proceed.
Benjamin Siegrist, a Swiss custodian who joined from Dundee United, is under contract until 2026, although it’s unlikely he’ll stay that long.

James McCarthy, a midfielder for the Republic of Ireland, failed to appear in the team portrait, which says it all despite having a contract through 2025.

The Argentinean, who has a contract that runs through 2027, has played in just two games so far this year. The future may lie elsewhere.

As part of the transition to the new era under Rodgers, Maik Nawrocki, Gustaf Lagerbielke, Odin Thiago Holm, Hyun-Jun Yang, Hyeok-Kyu Kwon, Luis Palma, and Marco Tilio all signed contracts through 2028. After entering six months earlier, Yuki Kobayashi and Oh have contracts that are the same length, albeit Kobayashi has had trouble making an effect while Iwata’s loan was made permanent in the summer.

men in one clubs
James Forrest, a winger who recently signed a contract extension that would keep him on the team until 2025, still has two years left to go.

Mikey Johnston, a winger who has a contract through 2016, like Forrest, rose through the Parkhead ranks.
