It is ‘clearly not’ good enough

Are there two sets of rules? Sydney Swans coach rages that the AFL’s score review system is ‘obviously not’ good enough, just weeks after the Crows’ season was jeopardised by a disputed win against Adelaide.
The game included two disputed goal review judgements.

This follows Sydney’s disputed victory over Adelaide.

Only three weeks ago, the Adelaide Crows were denied a place in the AFL finals due to the score review system.

The Sydney Swans were eliminated from the AFL finals by Carlton after two disputed scoring reviews in the 11.8 (74) to 9.14 (68) loss.

Ben Keays of Adelaide scored in the last seconds of their match against Sydney in the penultimate round of the regular season, but it was ruled a behind despite video evidence that it went past the sticks.

But the goal umpire signalled the ball hit the post and did not seek a video review.

On Friday night, the Swans were on the wrong side of the ledger when it came to video review decisions.

Longmire was left fuming at the rulings, particularly the second, which did not appear definitive on review despite the soft call on the pitch being a behind.

When asked if he thought the contentious AFL score review system was working, Longmire replied flatly, “clearly not.”

‘We kicked 2.5 in the fourth quarter, and that makes a difference in those circumstances,’ he remarked during his press conference.

‘We need to take advantage of our opportunities.

‘(Accuracy) is an essential stat in football – speak to Leigh Matthews,’ he added, referencing to the champion coach’s goals-to-minutes philosophy.

‘At the end of the day, you have to take your chances. Unfortunately, we did not seize opportunities when they presented themselves.’

‘When I’m on the bench, you don’t get to view replays like you guys in the press box do,’ he explained.

‘I didn’t know – I don’t know, haven’t seen it yet.’

Longmire did say that he wanted the technology to be evaluated and enhanced.

You’d want to believe so (that technology will improve),’ he added.

‘Haven’t we been on both sides of the fence?

‘We put a lot of effort into getting things right.’

There’s a sense of vindication in seeing Sydney lose by a goal, especially after that gulden score review that was definitely a goal, but such is life; fix the review, afl.

It’s ironic that two goal reviews went against Sydney.

Many football fans saw it as a just way for the Swans’ season to end after only making the finals due to the controversial decision in the Crows game.

‘A couple of weeks ago, score review wasn’t an issue, but now Johnny boy feels it is.

Commentators were split on which of Acres’ touches had the most impact on the outcome.

‘Wow. ‘I’m not sure there’s a glove for it,’ remarked James Brayshaw.

‘They think they were a little stiff with one (Sydney).

‘I don’t see any sign of the ball being touched,’ says the narrator.

The gentle call of a behind, according to Richmond great Matthew Richardson, was the deciding factor.

‘However, overruling the umpire will be difficult.

‘Could you overrule that categorically? That would be a brave call.’

‘I don’t believe you can override it.

‘It’s too hazy to categorise.’
