Before Collingwood’s victory in the grand final, Craig McRae made the critical mistake of telling his team members about his impending pregnancy.
McRae, 50, gave birth to his first child with wife Gabrielle on the morning of the championship game, and he was overcome with happiness on Saturday.
Only a few hours after Maggie was born, McRae presided over the Pies’ illustrious victory that put an end to their 13-year drought for a championship.He declared on stage at the MCG that “today was already the best day of my life” since “my wife gave birth to a little girl this morning at 7:45.”

To his Pies team, whom he has referred to as his “44 sons” throughout the season, McRae broke the news before the opening bounce.
But when he announced the happy update, he made an incredible error.
He admitted to SEN, “I thought I’d be really emotional.” Before Maggie was born, I had a plan involving the 44 boys on my shirt as a legacy item.
I anticipated feeling fairly emotional about it. I desired to be joyous rather than sentimental.
Anyway, I genuinely said, “Boys, I’ve got 44 sons on my shirt and today’s already the best day of my life because we’ve had a son,” in my crazed attempt to get it out. nonetheless, we had a girl!
This is how absurd it was. The players start to yell, so I put up a photo of Maggie there, and they started to say, “That’s a strange boy’s name.” I was a complete mess.
