Former Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes has died.

The NRL icon is said to have died of a heart attack while cycling on Tuesday morning.

Folkes, who was crowned Dally M coach of the year in 2004, was honoured by Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs CEO Andrew Hill.

“The club is shocked and saddened by the news of the passing of Bulldogs legend Steve Folkes,” said Hill in a statement. “Steve played such an important role in the Bulldogs’ history, both as a player and as a coach, and was without a doubt one of the club’s giants.”

Between 1978 and 1991, Folkes played 245 games for Canterbury, winning three premierships. Folkes returned to his previous team as coach a few years after retiring, leading the Bulldogs to a 2004 Grand Final victory over the Roosters.
