The Arizona Fall League’s ERA (1.29) is led by an intriguing Red Sox signee.
Lefty Zach Penrod, who was signed by the Red Sox out of Indy Ball in August, pitched three scoreless innings in Arizona Fall League action on Saturday. However, the Glendale Desert Dogs were defeated 5-4 by the Salt River Rafters.
Penrod began his career with Glendale. He struck out three batters while allowing two hits and one walk.

He went 4-1 with a 2.98 ERA (54 ⅓ innings, 18 earned runs) and 1.31 WHIP in 13 games (10 starts) for the Missoula PaddleHeads of Pioneer League this past summer. He then went 2-1 with a 2.18 ERA (20 ⅔ innings, five earned runs) and 1.31 WHIP in four starts for High-A Greenville.
~ Corey Rosier went 1-for-3 with a single, walk, run, RBI and two steals out of the leadoff spot for Glendale. His two steals give him seven in 17 games for Glendale. He’s 21-for-67 (.313) with a .403 on-base percentage, three doubles and one triple.
~ Nathan Hickey, who Baseball America ranks Boston’s No. 10 prospect, went 2-for-3 with a double. The 23-year-old catcher is 9-for-44 (.205) with a .375 on-base percentage. He’s kept the OBP high by walking. He has drawn 12 walks while striking out 17 times in 13 games.
In four starts, he has a 1.29 ERA (14 innings, two earned runs). Opponents are only batting.184 against him. The only issue is one of command. In 14 innings, he has eight walks and 14 strikeouts.
