contract confirmed

Craig Counsell of the Milwaukee Brewers has received one contract offer (source).

This offseason, the Milwaukee Brewers hope to retain manager Craig Counsell. He is a soon-to-be sought-after free agent, and the New York Mets and Cleveland Guardians inquired and were granted permission to interview him before his contract with the Brew Crew expires later this week. According to reports, he has received one contract offer.

There is widespread conjecture that Craig Counsell intends to set a new standard of salary for baseball managers. The Brewers paid him $3.50 million last year. The organisations he is speaking with have always paid their managers highly, with Buck Showalter previously earning $3.75 million with the Mets in 2023 and Terry Francona earning $4.50 million with the Guardians.

According to a recent New York Post piece, Craig Counsell did get a contract offer from the Milwaukee Brewers shortly after the season ended. Jon Heyman and Mike Puma did not share any information on the average annual value or length of time.

Given that Craig Counsell is now employed by the Brewers, albeit for a few more days, it should come as no surprise that they made the first contract offer. It’s also not surprising that Craig Counsell is waiting on this material and listening to what other organisations have to say.

Craig Counsell will have the option to return to the Brewers after speaking with other organisations and using other offers as leverage. If Milwaukee is serious about keeping him, they will submit a rebuttal and revise their original contract offer. It will be interesting to watch what the Mets and Guardians give Craig Counsell and whether he takes advantage of any of their offers.
