Why He has to be given the managerial job

Counsell is being interviewed by the Cleveland Guardians for a management position, according to an AP source.

CLEVELAND, OHIO – A source familiar with the discussions told The Associated Press on Monday, Oct. 30 that Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell is speaking with the Cleveland Guardians about their managing job.

Counsell, who has led the Brewers to the postseason five times in the last six years, is at Progressive Field for an interview with the Guardians, according to a person familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the team is not making any of its search public.

Counsell’s contract with the Brewers expires this week, but the team is allowing him to go elsewhere while hoping to re-sign the prized 53-year-old. The New York Mets are also said to be interested in Counsell, and they have significantly more money to offer him than the Brewers or the Guardians.

Cleveland is looking for a manager for the first time since 2012, after Terry Francona, the club’s all-time winningest manager, stepped down at the end of the season.

Counsell has a curious relationship to Cleveland. As a light-hitting infielder with the Florida Marlins, he hit a game-tying sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 7 of the 1997 World Series, helping the Marlins beat Cleveland and win the championship.

Counsell spent 16 seasons in the major leagues.

Several individuals have been interviewed by the Guardians to succeed Francona. Mariners bullpen coach Stephen Vogt, who is considered one of the leading candidates, was in Cleveland last week for his second visit with the organisation.
