Reason why the deal must be terminated immediately

Jim Harbaugh disputes that Michigan cancelled his contract extension when the sign-stealing controversy became public.

Earlier in October, multiple media sources indicated that the Michigan Wolverines football team was poised to announce a massive contract extension for head coach Jim Harbaugh.

According to The Athletic, Harbaugh was on the verge of becoming the Big Ten’s highest-paid head coach until news of a sign-stealing controversy involving the programme became public.

More recently, the Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend that Michigan’s administration had cancelled a historic contract offer to Harbaugh.

“The University of Michigan has rescinded a new contract offer for head football coach Jim Harbaugh in the wake of a sign-stealing scandal that has rocked one of the favourites to play for college football’s national championship,” a news release said.

During a press conference on Monday, Michigan’s head coach pushed back against this. “I wouldn’t say that’s accurate, no,” Harbaugh replied when questioned about the reports.

“I can talk about the football game this Saturday,” Harbaugh explained. “I can talk about the vibes in that preparation and where we are now.” You don’t appear to be interested in it. That’s all I have to say.”

Harbaugh is in the second year of a five-year contract extension that he signed with Michigan in 2022. On his current contract, he earns just over $7 million a year.
