Free agent Deal confirmed

Front-line pitchers are expected to be pursued by the Baltimore Orioles in free agency.
It is anticipated that the Baltimore Orioles will target a top pitcher in free agency this winter.

This winter, as the burner gets hotter, there’s a lot of talk about the Baltimore Orioles.

Due to their nearly nonexistent payroll, the 101-win Orioles are able to sign any free agent that is available.

Orioles general manager Mike Elias stated that Baltimore is probably going to chase an arm that fits at the top of the rotation, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

The Orioles may be especially interested in longtime Philadelphia Phillies starter Aaron Nola.

Blake Snell and Nola will be the top two starting pitchers available as free agents; although Snell already owns a Cy Young (and probably will shortly add another), Nola might be the better choice.

Not including the 2020 season, which was cut short due to COVID, the right-hander has a reputation for being among the game’s most resilient pitchers, having pitched more than 160 innings in five of the previous seven seasons.

In terms of pitching innings pitched and injury history, he is also the more secure investment.

To add pitching, Baltimore may potentially look to the trade market. With their logjam in the outfield, the Orioles’ current outfield duo of Austin Hays and Anthony Santander are perceived as excess by Baltimore in addition to attracting trade interest.

A front-line starter could be acquired by the Orioles through trading of MLB components. How realistic it is is still up for debate, since practically every team wants to be in the postseason in 2024 and an enlarged playoff system has proven to be very successful for those who barely make it.
