Why now: The tremendous guy is seriously injured and may not return

Kirk Ferentz reacts to a season-ending injury suffered by a player.
“He’s one [heck] of a football player and he’s a great young guy.”

The Iowa Hawkeyes announced on Wednesday that top cornerback Cooper DeJean has suffered a season-ending injury and will not return to the lineup this week. And Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz made it abundantly apparent how valuable he was to the squad both on and off the pitch.

During his press conference this week, Ferentz made a point not only to praise DeJean for what he did on the field, but what he did off of it as well.

“You think about how well he does so many things and how smoothly he does them, doesn’t draw really a lost of attention to himself as an individual except with his play,” Ferentz said in a statement. “It’s simply outstanding.” You catch yourself thinking, ‘Did he just do that?’ It’s simply incredible. I can go down the list of punt returns that were called back. I just wanted to mention him because he’s one of the best players I’ve ever seen, and he does it in such a subtle, graceful manner.

“I’ll tell you what, he’s one hell of a football player and a great young man.” He’s a fantastic man. But, yeah, talk about a football player.”

Despite the fact that DeJean’s season is ended, he is expected to be taken in the first two rounds of the 2017 NFL Draught.
