Three players for the Blue Jays The Padres ought to insist on Juan Soto in a trade.
Any combination of these three players should be demanded by the San Diego Padres in exchange for Juan Soto, should they decide to sell him to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Shohei Ohtani’s signing has dominated a lot of talk this summer, and for good reason. He will be paid accordingly because he is without a doubt the top player in the game right now. Fans of the San Diego Padres are quite interested in Ohtani (mostly in trying to figure out why he won’t sign with the Dodgers), but they are even more interested in Juan Soto, the largest player available for trade.
This offseason, it seems more like a matter of when than if Juan Soto is likely to be traded. It’s the only practical way the Padres can cut costs without sacrificing their competitiveness. Obtaining a large sum of money for him now is the smartest course of action for A.J. Preller, given the slim likelihood that the team will maintain him past this season.
The Padres will definitely still make a lot of money, but they won’t get nearly as much as they gave up to get Soto. We’re talking about Juan Soto here, after all. He’s worth a fortune, even on an ending contract.
For almost the whole offseason, the Yankees have been the front-runners in a Soto deal; but, negotiations between the two teams have stalled recently, with the Toronto Blue Jays emerging as the new favorite. The Jays are ready to have a big offseason after yet another poor season. They remain one of the teams that are chasing Shohei Ohtani. Should they fail to acquire him, executing a Soto deal would be the most spectacular move they could make.
The Padres should want any combination of these three players in order to even consider talking to the Blue Jays about a Soto trade.
