Texas’s Austin The storied and intense rivalry between the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns will carry over to the SEC for the upcoming season.

Fortunately for fans of college football, the matchup’s traditions are officially being revived—albeit with a contemporary touch.

On Wednesday, Texas and Oklahoma revealed that they had extended their agreement to play the yearly Red River Rivalry at the famed Cotton Bowl in Dallas through the 2036 season. To “enhance the fan experience,” the 93-year-old stadium will undergo a $140-million, two-year refurbishment.

Texas AD Chris Del Conte released a statement saying, “We’re thrilled we’ve been able to extend the contract and continue our partnership with Oklahoma, the State Fair of Texas, and the City of Dallas on our great game.” “With all of its history, tradition, and splendor, the Allstate Red River Rivalry game should continue to be held in the Cotton Bowl because there is nothing like it. Generations of fans have created countless memories at the legendary stadium among the spectacle that is the State Fair of Texas, and we are thrilled to carry on that legacy far into the future.”

Further information regarding the possible modifications that might be made to the Cotton Bowl as part of the renovations was provided by Texas Athletics.

The University stated in a press release that “improvements to Cotton Bowl Stadium include widening concourses and adding escalators, increasing fans’ comfort level while entering and exiting the stadium.” In order to improve the pace of service for fans during events, this will also involve remodeling the concession stands and restrooms in addition to expanding the number of premium environments and hospitality sections. By September 2026, the stadium’s west side improvements are expected to be finished in their initial phase. By September 2034, the city also plans to complete a second phase of extensive modifications to the stadium’s east side.”

The Longhorns fell 34-30 to OU in this year’s edition of the rivalry, but the two programs will now have many more memories in store at the historic venue.
