Painful departure: I won’t play again ,I am leaving due to my condition

Joe Barry: Green Bay Packers part ways with their defensive coordinator.

NEW DELHI: The Green Bay Packers have decided not to retain Joe Barry as defensive coordinator for the 2024 season, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero on Wednesday. The Packers later confirmed the decision.
In a statement, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur thanked Barry for his contributions over the previous three seasons, acknowledging the difficulty of such decisions.

In the 2023 season, the Packers’ defense ranked 17th in yards allowed and 10th in points, exhibiting a notable disparity in performance given the talent on the roster, which includes eight first-round picks. Despite a strong finish to the season, highlighted by a postseason victory against the Dallas Cowboys, Barry’s departure became inevitable after a Week 15 loss to the Cleveland Browns and a narrow victory over the two-win

He added, “These decisions are extremely difficult, and Joe is one of the best men I’ve had the opportunity to work with in this league.”

Barry became the Packers’ defensive coordinator in 2021, succeeding Mike Pettine. He was personally chosen by LaFleur, who consistently supported Barry despite the defensive unit’s challenges.

The Packers’ defense faced criticism for questionable calls, particularly on third downs, and a lack of cohesion and communication throughout the season. The unit’s struggles were underscored by the home loss to the Browns and the near-upset by the Panthers.
Although the defense showcased improvement in the postseason, it wasn’t sufficient to secure Barry’s position. LaFleur, recognizing the team’s vast talent pool, anticipates that the vacancy will be an attractive opportunity for potential candidates seeking the role of defensive coordinator.
