Why Him? Spurs announced a clear and shocking departure just now

The San Antonio Spurs have waived Charles Bediako, a former Alabama center.

The 2022-2023 college basketball season in Tuscaloosa was memorable, as the Crimson Tide won the SEC championship and earned the No. 1 overall seed in last year’s March Madness. Alabama then lost all three assistant coaches, three players to the NBA, and a few others to the portal shortly after.

Brandon Miller and Noah Clowney were both selected in the first round of the NBA Draft, so their departure was not surprising. The surprise came when Charles Bediako chose to continue with the draft process. Bediako was named to the SEC All-Freshman team after averaging 6.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game in 19.3 minutes over two years at Tuscaloosa.

Bediako was not selected in the NBA Draft, but he signed with the Spurs for the NBA Summer League. He signed a two-way contract with the team in late October, but was waived late Friday evening. The seven-footer is likely to have other suitors, but this is unfortunate news.
