Why now ? Alabama star player seriously injured and may not return

Alabama’s starting running back, Jase McClellan, was seen on crutches in the final minutes of their Iron Bowl victory, according to Nick Saban’s injury update.

Alabama’s last-minute victory over Auburn on Saturday night was overshadowed by the sight of starting running back Jase McClellan on crutches and in a walking boot on the sidelines. The postgame celebration video shows McClellan entering the locker room on crutches around the 0:58 mark. Alabama head coach Nick Saban spoke to the media on the SEC Championship game head coaches teleconference on Sunday.

“He’s had a little foot injury all year long,” Saban told reporters. “He tweaked it in the game. He’ll be day-to-day this week. But I can’t tell you how much progress… the next 48 hours will tell us whether he’ll make the kind of progress he needs to be able to practice some and play in the game.”

The senior running back carried 15 times for 66 yards in the victory over the Tigers. His final carry of the game came under four minutes into Alabama’s final drive, when he was dragged down behind the line of scrimmage. Roydell Williams was the Crimson Tide’s running back for the remainder of the drive.

McClellan is Alabama’s leading rusher this season, with 803 yards and six touchdowns.

No. 8 Alabama will play No. 1 Georgia in the SEC Championship game on Saturday at 3 p.m.
