Ex-Maple Leafs standout Ryan O’Reilly takes a jab at his old team for the choice to depart.

Ryan O’Reilly, a former top player for the Toronto Maple Leafs, recently made news for his open comments about leaving the renowned Canadian team. Following a remarkable 14-season NHL career, O’Reilly entered free agency for the first time, signing a four-year, $18 million contract with the Nashville Predators.

This move has sparked speculation regarding the reasons behind his choice to leave Toronto, a team he once praised as a fantastic place to play.

When asked about his move to the Hockey Central Signing Season panel, O’Reilly admitted:

“It’s true what people say — it is a little crazy.”
His choice to join the Predators was inspired by the team’s future plans under new general manager Barry Trotz and coach Andrew Brunette. Notably, the presence of his elder brother, Cal O’Reilly, who had rejoined the Predators, influenced his decision to travel south.

O’Reilly lauded the Predators’ leadership, notably captain Roman Josi, for their dedication to doing things correctly in order to be competitive. He contrasted this to his experience in Toronto, saying:

“It gets some airtime on television, but it’s not everything. It’s not simply a game there.”

Furthermore, O’Reilly stated that the Predators gave him more opportunities than the Maple Leafs. He is anticipated to be Nashville’s first-line centre and play an important role in teaching the team’s young players, alongside former Maple Leafs defender Luke Schenn.

While expressing his gratitude for the Maple Leafs and the pride that comes with the franchise, O’Reilly frankly stated:

“My family felt it was better. We’ll check if it’s the correct one. You never know, but so far, I am loving it.”
O’Reilly’s departure from Toronto has rekindled conversations about the rigorous scrutiny that comes with playing for the Leafs, particularly for players from Ontario. As he begins on this new adventure with the Predators, O’Reilly reflects fondly on his time with the Leafs while being pleased with his decision to pursue a new chance in the NHL.

Ryan O’Reilly stated that the media focus was not the only reason for his Maple Leafs departure.
Ryan O’Reilly previously discussed his departure from the Toronto Maple Leafs on “First Up” with Aaron Korolnek and Carlo Colaiacovo.

While noting the limelight of playing in Toronto, O’Reilly emphasised that it was not the only reason for his decision. He expressed thanks for his time in Toronto, but felt that a change of scenery would enhance his career.

O’Reilly acknowledged the Leafs’ skill and competitive potential, but also the hardships of the limelight. During his tenure, he was instrumental in helping the squad win its first postseason series.
