Saquon Barkley sends a farewell message to Giants fans after signing with the Eagles.
Some New York Giants supporters, like veteran running back Tiki Barber, were not pleased with Saquon Barkley’s decision to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles. Barkley took a minute to say goodbye to the Giants on Thursday, writing a statement on social media to clear the air and thank the club and its fans. Barkley praised the fan community for their support since his selection as the No. 2 pick in the 2018 draft. He closed his message by saying he hopes fans would respect his decision to relocate to Philadelphia.

After failing to reach an agreement on a new contract to stay in New York, Barkley signed a three-year, $37.75 million deal with the rival Eagles, which some Giants supporters saw as a betrayal. During his initial press conference on Thursday, before publishing his comments on social media, Barkley admitted that he believed he might have handled his departure better.

“I don’t think I handled it appropriately on social media. “I think I could have said a proper goodbye,” he told USA Today. “Like I said, once I announced, things got frantic. But, yeah, I’m forever grateful to Giants fans. I’m really grateful for them. Unfortunately, the National Football League is a business. And I was able to reach to a point where I am certain that I can compete and win. “I can stay close to home.” He gave it another shot at a meaningful farewell later Thursday evening, sharing the message with his fans as he begins the new chapter of his career.
