AN excellent performance against excellent opponents.

Michael Voss was a proud coach following Carlton’s Michael Voss  19-point win over GWS in Round 6, which was founded on clarity and conviction in the team approach.

Backed by a raucous home crowd, the Blues stormed back from 20 points down in the second half to upset the unbeaten Giants by three goals, resuming their winning ways following a tight defeat last week.

Here is what Voss had to say.

In his assessment of the game, he stated that the phases came together more closely today. In the early parts of the season, we had two that were going well and one that was slightly off. In the first half, the way we defended and the pressure we applied to the ball were not precisely what we wanted. We focused on that at halftime and were lucky to be able to turn it around.

“That offered us some excellent looks on the other side of the ball. A very pleasing performance. We were completely up against it in the second quarter, and I believe that what demonstrates your team’s growth is your ability to absorb it, realize what happened, but then lock in and pull back the score by a couple of goals late. It offers you a look. That was a really important component, not only the second half.”

Regarding the opposition’s strength: “There were numerous opportunities to attack.” We had our moments. However, incomplete plays put us under pressure to defend more quickly. It felt like we cleaned it up both with and without the ball.

“That helped us regain control of the ball and turn the game back into a duel. They’re an amazing team, GWS. They’re difficult to stop even in the best of circumstances, and they make an excellent transition squad. “We did pretty well in that space today.”

Regarding the two-ruck dynamic: “The more games they play together, the better they’ll be.” The match fitness to be able to play those games, as well as Tom’s ability to go forward and score goals, allowed him to contribute. It is a good combo. We believe it is a particular strength of ours. It is especially pleasant to see them both in good form.

“Their shape communicates a lot, too. There is a lot of debate over whether two rucks are necessary. We have a style of play that we want to use, and we obviously dominated around the ball at centre-square bounce. “Their games had an impact today.”

The forward mix expressed satisfaction with their ability to kick a healthy score tonight. Furthermore, once the ball was on the floor, we set to work and established the necessary presence.

“There are a few new faces and bodies in there from last year to this year, with Fantasia and Elijah Hollands entering that area of the field. You play a variety of combinations at times. Being able to strengthen that connection and coherence will be critical throughout the year. Games like tonight, against a great defense, are good wins.

Zac Williams describes himself as a “corkie” right now. We adopted a cautious approach there, and the same with ‘Weiters’. We hope there’s nothing there.”

The next-man-in approach requires adaptability when losing a defender, as Matty Kennedy has demonstrated in the past two weeks. He’s done exceptionally well for himself to be able to slide back. What I hope that means is that it’s the next man up.

“To be able to take a squad approach to everything, guys are embracing the tasks assigned to them and getting the job done. That instills a lot of confidence in the team. When others can step in and complete the task, they encourage the next person to do the same. We had a handful of new faces on the backline today, including Lachie Cowan and Lewis Young. A strange combination, but they surely got the job done.”

Regarding Jacob Weitering: “Just a corkie.” It was a great effort because his mobility was limited, but he persevered as he always does. He didn’t grumble once; he simply went on with it.”

Jordan Boyd’s effort against Toby Greene was crucial for the team tonight. Greene is a talented and dangerous player, and Zac had the initial shot. Our defensive coach, Aaron Hamill, stated that he believed ‘Boydy’ was up to the assignment, therefore credit goes to both him and ‘Boydy’ for taking on that responsibility. He did an excellent job. “For a guy who hasn’t played much football to take it on was really impressive.”

Curnow and McKay’s combination has resulted in excellent separation throughout the season. That’s credit to them for taking that team approach, which is the type of system we need to be able to play. When their turn comes, they rise to the occasion. I hope that is something that all of us, not just Harry and Charlie, strive to attain.

“Hopefully, all of us will gain from it. Certainly, talking to those two, they enjoy toying with each other; they received a lot of attention tonight, and they were able to capitalize at various times. We need them; they’re key players on our team.”
