Clear And Shocking: Cleveland Cavaliers Just Announced……….

Blogtable: How will David Griffin’s departure impact the Cleveland Cavaliers’ future?
Each week, we ask our global network of writers to weigh in on the most pressing NBA issues of the day.

Steve Aschburner: David Griffin’s abrupt departure may not mean much right now, but good luck this season with the duct-taping of the squad he supervised (Kyle Korver, Derrick Williams, Deron Williams) on the way to a third straight Finals. When LeBron James requested enhancements, Griffin did not bristle or cower; instead, he went to work like the pro he is. Unless the Cavaliers’ revamped front office can sign Paul George or another significant difference-maker, this season will be marked with a “what-if” asterisk. And this is likely to set off the largest domino: it offers James with a ready-made explanation or even nudge if he decides to move to greener pastures next summer.

Fran Blinebury: It means that team owner Dan Gilbert needs to make the proper decision on David Griffin’s replacement. For all of the jokes about LeBron James being the “real” GM, Griffin made the major moves that propelled Cleveland to the Finals three years in a row and won the 2016 championship. LeBron has faith in Griffin’s ability to make sound decisions and complete tasks. With LeBron set to become a free agency again in 2018 and another departure from Cleveland possible, the stakes are high once more. Letting Griffin leave could push LeBron closer to the door.

Scott Howard-Cooper: It suggests the Cavaliers made a major mistake. Griffin’s success as a general manager was not just due to LeBron James’ decision to return. Griffin is good – he is smart, has a strong personality in a situation that necessitates one, and works hard. In fact, a rival executive once informed me that he is the league’s brightest general manager. If he is out of employment for an extended period of time, it is due to timing; jobs were filled before he and Dan Gilbert divorced. I’m not sure if this has a big impact on James. Maybe it’s something to think about, but I doubt it’ll be the deciding factor in whether he stays or leaves.
