Texas Tech basketball reportedly to host impact transfer big man

Federiko Federiko, a 6-foot-11 forward transfer from Pittsburgh, has committed to Texas Tech’s basketball program.

Last season, Federiko averaged 4.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game. All of that came in just an average of 21.3 minutes per outing.

Federiko started 26 of the 33 games that he played. And he could be an option to start for the Red Raiders given that he’s excellent at the one thing Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland values most, playing defense.

This past season, he had a 100.5 defensive rating (an estimate of the number of points a player allows per 100 possessions). On the other hand, he isn’t likely to be much of an offensive force, though.

Last season, Federiko had 4.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game. All of this occurred in an average of 21.3 minutes per expedition.

Federiko started 26 out of the 33 games he participated. And he may start for the Red Raiders since he excels at playing defense, which is what Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland cherishes the most.

This past season, he got a defensive rating of 100.5. However, he is unlikely to be a strong offensive force.

Throughout his 68-game career, he has averaged 5.7 points per game. This includes the 6.6 he recorded as a true freshman.

He has a 65.4% field goal percentage, with the majority of his points coming from dunks and putbacks. However, he has never tried a three-pointer in his career. In addition, throughout the last two seasons, he has only shot 53.4% from the free throw line.

This offseason, Texas Tech knew it needed to add more size. With Warren Washington, the Red Raiders’ starting center in 2023-24, having exhausted his eligibility, the team had no players taller than 6-foot-8 scheduled to return for the next season.

However, adding Federiko will not be enough. We saw how fragile Tech was this season when Washington missed a month with a foot ailment and there was no one of his size on the roster to replace him.

As a result, the Red Raiders need to sign another big man this offseason. It would be nice if they added one with a bit more scoring ability to balance out the offense.

The Red Raiders still have a lot of work to do in assembling next season’s team. McCasland could award up to six additional scholarships after eight players left his team this offseason, either through graduation or transfer.

However, bringing in Federiko was a significant milestone in the formation of the 2024-25 team. He offers a defensive grit that fans and coaches will appreciate, and he helps provide this team with much-needed size in the middle of the lane, which is crucial in college basketball.Texas Tech basketball is set to host transfer big man Great Osobor.
