South Sydney coach Jason Demetrious believes his players will “get in the trenches” in their Anzac Day match against the Melbourne Storm, giving the besieged Rabbitohs another chance to demonstrate their support for their mentor.

A scrappy last-start loss to Cronulla kept the circling wolves at away for the time being, with numerous players this week professing their support for Demetriou, who is under pressure to preserve his job with South Sydney sitting second lowest on the ladder with only one win in seven games.

Embracing the Anzac spirit, which featured a jersey presentation from Commodore Raymond Leggatt AM, CSC, the Royal Australian Navy’s Deputy Fleet Commander, Demetriou said the “external noise” continued to be tuned out by players eager to “represent the jersey the best we could.”

“For us, it’s in the trenches sort of attitude we took into our last game against Cronulla and Anzac Day represents an opportunity to do that again,” he told the media.

“To get out there, answer that call and represent the jersey the best way we can and, more importantly, improve from our last game.

“It’s special to play these games. When you put on that shirt, it feels different. “Playing on Anzac Day is extremely special.”

Demetriou has recalled hooker Damien Cook following a “honest” talk when he was dropped back to the NSW Cup for just one game, hoping the stint will inspire the veteran.

The coach made it clear that no one was safe when the team was suffering.

“There were only a few things we needed to work on. “Conversations will remain between Damien and myself,” Demetriou stated.

“He was really honest in how he handled returning to NSW Cup. We have the opportunity to implement a two-hooker system. Using that as an asset for us.
