Phil Parkinson tells Wrexham supporters there is more to come from
So, another Wrexham season has come and gone, and it is yet another success story in the Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds era.
Wrexham, who were promoted from the National League to League Two just a year ago, are celebrating once more.
Wrexham were promoted to League One earlier in April, but they pushed on to finish the season on a high note.
Wrexham won again on Saturday, beating Stockport County after defeating Crewe Alexandra the previous weekend.
Connor Lemonheigh-Evans put the Hatters ahead, but Wrexham rallied after the half, with Ollie Palmer tying it up.
Andy Cannon, a former Stockport midfielder, scored the winning goal for Wrexham, causing the STōK Cae Ras to go wild.
Phil Parkinson praised Max Cleworth.
Cannon’s goal came after some clever interaction along the right flank.
Max Cleworth, the defender, drove forward to support the attack, playing wide to set up Cannon for the goal.
We frequently see wide centre backs moving forward to make an effect in the final third, particularly when playing in a back three.
That is exactly how Wrexham set up, and Cleworth has the potential to become a top right-sided centre defender.
Cleworth is Wrexham’s most exciting talent
Wrexham have understandably focused on signing immediate impact players in the McElhenney and Reynolds era.
Experienced performers who have proven themselves in League One and League Two – sometimes even higher – have been brought to wRexham to accelerate through the leagues.
Resale value doesn’t appear to have been a key focus for Wrexham in recent times but Cleworth is one talent who could make the club a lot of money down the line.
Of course, we don’t want to see Cleworth leave any time soon, but his development on the right side of Wrexham’s back three will make him very, very valuable.
Cleworth is only 21 and just seems to go from strength to strength and clubs higher up in the pyramid are surely paying attention.
The defender is certainly Wrexham’s most exciting talent right now and we can only hope that we see him continue his development at Wrexham for a while yet.
