Brad Fittler, the NSW State of Origin coach, is leaving his role after six years in command.
Brad Fittler has departed his position as NSW State of Origin coach after six years in command.

On Thursday afternoon, the NSWRL announced his departure, claiming they had offered him a job for next year but he had elected not to continue in the post.

Fittler has coached 18 Origin games, winning nine, and the Blues won series in 2018, 2019, and 2021.

“The board understands and respects his decision,” NSWRL Chairman Paul Conlon said in a statement.

“Freddy was a legendary player who returned to coach the squad when his state needed him.

“He achieved quick success, and his series victory in 2021, which included record scorelines in Townsville and Brisbane, will be remembered in NSW Blues history.

“He also made significant contributions through other programmes, such as his Hogs motorbike trips in regional NSW, which helped to unite the state.

“He holds a special place in NSW Rugby League history.”

Fittler returned to coaching in late 2017, following an eight-year hiatus.

He made a quick impact, leading NSW to an Origin triumph in his first two seasons.

According to the NSWRL statement, Fittler genuinely enjoyed his time coaching the Blues.

“I loved doing the job and NSW and I will always love NSW,” he told the crowd.

The NSWRL indicated that it would now seek expressions of interest from coaches for the Blues in 2024.

The announcement of Fittler’s resignation comes as Queensland has signed Billy Slater to a new three-year contract to remain as Maroon coach.
