SAD NEWS: THE MOST SEASONED KEY PLAYER REQUESTS TO LEAVE DUE TO

Wooga Poplar intends to visit Kentucky, which reportedly wants the Miami transfer.
According to him, the situation between Kentucky and Poplar appears to be improving.

The Kentucky Wildcats appear to be in the running to sign Miami Hurricanes transfer Wooga Poplar.

When Poplar first joined the transfer portal, Kentucky was among the several colleges that contacted the soon-to-be senior guard, who has one year of eligibility left.

Poplar will now allegedly visit Kentucky, according to his father’s chat with Adam Zagoria.

“They want him,” Poplar’s father informed Zagoria.

Poplar, a 4-star recruit in the class of 2021, spent the previous three seasons at Miami and helped the Hurricanes reach the Final Four in 2023. That season, the 6-foot-5, 197-pound Poplar averaged 8.4 points (47% shooting and 37.5% on three-pointers), 3.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.1 steals in 23.6 minutes of action.

Poplar’s expectations were sky-high heading into the 2023-24 season, to the point that he may be selected in the 2024 NBA Draft. However, things did not go as planned, as the Canes were a massive disappointment after starting the year as a preseason top-15 team but losing 10 straight games to finish the season.

Poplar posted good stats, averaging 13.1 points on 42.6% shooting from the field (38.5% from three), 4.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.9 turnovers in 31.2 minutes per game. According to KenPom, Poplar generally played from the 2 and 3 positions in the backcourt, with some work as a small-ball 4, so he does offer some lineup versatility.

Poplar had one of his greatest performances last season in Kentucky’s win over the Canes, scoring 19 points on 7/13 shooting (0/2 from deep), eight rebounds, two steals, and one assist.

Because Poplar is more of a wing guy, you have to wonder if he may be insurance if one of Koby Brea or Jaxson Robinson goes down for Kentucky. Brea is on commitment watch, while Robinson intends to test the NBA Draft process for a few more weeks.

Instead of presumably waiting to go all-in with Great Osobor, Kentucky recently accepted Brandon Garrison’s pledge. Could this be a circumstance in which Kentucky is willing to accept Poplar now rather than waiting for Robinson?

Poplar is also considering entering the NBA draft, but he plans to return to college for his senior season.
