What they said: Vote on four important issues.
Michael Voss summarizes Melbourne’s defeat in Round 9.

FOUR important considerations.

At the end of another thrilling match between Carlton and Melbourne, the Blues emerged victorious, which was crucial, despite an amazing start and tense finish.

AFL Senior Coach Michael Voss assessed the overall performance of the game and praised his team’s tenacity in traveling to Melbourne to begin the match and in surviving a Dees onslaught to end it.

AFL 2023: Brian Cook says stability has helped coach Michael Voss turn around Carlton Blues' season

What he had to say was this.

Regarding his initial response to the game:

We’ll take a closer look at it by slightly dividing the game. We wanted to make sure we got everything because the start was so amazing. When we realized Melbourne had just had a five-day vacation, we made an effort to push ahead early. Scoring that many goals so quickly was crucial.

“I perceived it as a real arm wrestle that took place in the center of the floor. Although the conclusion was a little unusual, it doesn’t lessen the game’s benefits in our opinion. We’ve been playing against some extremely strong teams and have been in terrific form for the past month or so.

Maybe that’s why it felt like that in the final quarter—we haven’t been able to record the victories. We defeated an extremely strong team and were able to secure the four points that we needed.”

Regarding Nic Newman’s last-second tackle:

“It was quite remarkable. It took us a couple moments like that to move in our favor. In the fourth quarter, they definitely had more than their share, and they took the necessary stands when called upon. They put up a fierce fight back, which hopefully demonstrates our progress and improvement over the previous two to three weeks as well as their resilience.

We have been pursuing it assiduously. We’ll probably look back on it and say there were times we should have performed better and maintained more composure, but all in all, I was really delighted with the victory to be able to withstand 20 inside 50s in the last quarter and still manage to hang on. It was an excellent victory.

We’ve been discussing the phases of the game and our team’s defensive strategy. There was a noticeable change. We’re pleased enough with the outcome to leave.”

Regarding fierce defense:

I think that’s going to be when things go different for us. Melbourne has been able to improve that aspect of their game for a lengthier amount of time. They were able to continue doing so for a little while longer for the entire evening, but over the previous 12 months, we’ve demonstrated that we’re fairly competent in that area of the game.

It highlights the significance of it, even though we’re still in its early stages of development. We can play the offense we want to play on top of it, and we also like to play some exciting portions of our game.

However, that will never surpass how we

Regarding Adam Cerra:

“Slight hamstring strain. We’ll scan that to determine its location.

Regarding Christian Petracca’s impact:

He was fairly attractive, so we tried a few various matchups with him. That was a mistake [for us] because Matty Kennedy was attempting to work with him a little bit around the ball, but he performed too well and Petracca moved forward!

“He was extraordinary. He might have made a significant impact on them. We often discuss the collective, but it really did appear to make a major difference. His solo performance was quite remarkable.

“However, we had to work together to complete the task tonight. Fortunately, we had more than one individual involved.

Regarding George Hewett’s debut as a sub:

We’re splitting the work. The season is lengthy. Last week, Matty Kennedy made an appearance there, and George took his turn. Our little forwards have also performed admirably. That will be our continued strategy.

We know that this is a long season, so we have a squad mindset that we want to maintain throughout. We’ve been lucky to regain a few more bodies, which should increase the pressure on the players and their positions. The following level is driven by that.

“We have the staff to continue pushing others and finding our shape. We will continue to split the workload if it is possible.”

About Sam Walsh’s anatomy:

“In actuality, he missed less preseason than you may have thought. He didn’t see the back end of it when the games started, but he did get to experience the entire preseason.

Apart from that, he has extremely high expectations for both himself and his playing style. He is a fiercely competitive animal. He was always going to need some time to get into it, but does that seem to be the case? He’s a key member of our team who basically grabbed it up and ran with it.”

Regarding the midfield group as a whole:

“When you talk about ‘Pitto’, Tom, Patrick, ‘Walshy’, Kennedy, George, and Cerra, you’ll see that our midfield group hasn’t played together very often. Their combined football playing experience is limited. It takes some time to develop the cohesion and relationships you require.

“They have an incredibly good relationship. They work well together as teammates, so the more times we can get them to play together, the better.”
