Perine underwent ankle surgery.
Monday, January 11.
The Sooners’ best rusher in 2015 with 1,349 yards and 16 touchdowns will miss spring practice after undergoing surgery to repair a ligament in his ankle, which he injured in the Orange Bowl versus the Clemson Tigers, according to ESPN’s Matt Fortuna.

Clemson limited Perine to 58 yards on 15 attempts in Oklahoma’s 37-17 loss to the Tigers.

The good news for Perine is that he is handling the situation and could be ready when the Sooners return to practice after the summer. Perine was a significant reason why Oklahoma finished strong and made the College Football Playoff.

He rushed for 166, 188, and 131 yards in Oklahoma’s final three regular-season games, leading the Sooners to the Big 12 title.

Oklahoma posted an update on Perine’s injury, which was followed by a brief statement from head coach Bob Stoops:

Perine’s absence will create opportunity for others to shine in the backfield. Freshman tailback Joe Mixon ran for 753 yards as Perine’s backup, with his greatest performance coming against Oklahoma State, when he had 14 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

While Mixon has shown that he will be terrific, the Sooners prefer to have Perine in the backfield alongside quarterback Baker Mayfield.
