St George Illawarra have signed fullback Tyrell Sloan to a new two-year contract, taking a huge step forward in their ongoing rebuilding efforts.

Sloan has enjoyed a promising start to the season under new coach Shane Flanagan, who has consistently expressed high expectations for the 22-year-old.

Sloan, a rising star in the game known for his attacking prowess, had been free to talk with rivals since last November, as his contract was set to expire at the end of this season.

Sloan, on the other hand, had made no secret of his wish to remain with the club, where he had appeared in all 48 first-grade games since debuting in 2021.

The Indigenous All Stars representative had been in talks with the Dragons for weeks before the club announced on Thursday that he had been retained until 2026.

“Tyrell’s an exciting young player who continues to learn and improve every week,” Flanagan stated.

“His efforts to enhance all aspects of his game this year have been quite rewarding.

“We’re looking forward to seeing him continue to develop at the Dragons over the coming seasons.”

Sloan had been by far the Dragons’ most significant player without a contract beyond this season until the club re-signed State of Origin second-rower Jaydn Su’A last month.

Jack de Belin, the club’s longest-tenured current player, along with fellow middle forward Ben Murdoch-Masila, backup half Jesse Marschke, and new recruit Tom Eisenhuth, will all be out of contract at the end of 2024.
