JJ McCarthy Addresses Michigan Haters and Non-Believers

JJ McCarthy is 2-0 versus Ohio State, so he understands what it takes to beat Michigan’s archrival. Unfortunately, outsiders and Michigan haters believe that Michigan’s triumphs over OSU in 2021 and 2022 were solely due to Michigan’s sign snatching scheme. McCarthy, clearly, does not see it that way. “Nobody sees the work we put in,” McCarthy explained. “I truly believe we have worked the hardest in the country — each and every player and coach.” And now it’s so simple to read headlines and follow a story. But when you’re in here and see what’s going on, you wouldn’t believe it’s anything other than hard work, dedication, and execution.”

Despite the outside noise from non-Michigan fans, McCarthy finds solace in how past Michigan players and alumni have supported him and his colleagues. They haven’t yet started blowing up his phone, but he knows people like Tom Brady, Desmond Howard, and Charles Woodson are sending him good vibes.

“They know exactly what our mindset is,” McCarthy said of the greats of the past. “They understand what this game means to us, just as it did to them. They just know that this is a team that is dedicated to improving every day and doing the right things. So the texts may arrive the night before the game, with just a little boost or anything to get our thoughts right, but they know precisely what we’re about. And they certainly have faith in us.” Even with the support of some of the most well-known football players in history, the Wolverines have developed a “Michigan vs. Everyone” mentality, as McCarthy noted.

“It truly does feel that way. “It truly does,” he stated. “I consider it a blessing in disguise because it has brought us closer as a unit, as an organisation, and as an entire Michigan family.” All of the Michigan faithful reaching out and showing their support means everything to us, and we are so grateful. It means a lot to us that all of the Michigan alumni are rooting for us, and it just gives us more desire to come out here every day and do our best for those men. But, above all, for ourselves.”

Just before McCarthy left the podium he tried his best to explain how he’s felt throughout the last month or so. With new information coming out on a daily basis, a staffer and a coach being fired, Jim Harbaugh being suspended and a widely-accepted narrative following the team around, McCarthy took a second to gather his thoughts before telling everyone what its been like for the starting QB. “Knowing how much blood, sweat and tears we put into this season, and all the hours that we put in, just being diluted by a scandal and all that it’s, it’s unfortunate,” McCarthy said. “But it’s out of our control and we only focus on what we can control and try to get better every single day and not worry about that stuff. But it is unfortunate that people don’t think we put in the work to get to where we are.”
